If you ever want to know the real meaning of Kung Fu, purity of affinity, purity in freedom from affliction, transformation of our soul into complete divinity then Shaolin movie remains an evergreen example for this. Apparently, in my perspective I feel this is the masterpiece work ever done by any Chinese film Industry.
Shaolin was being inspired from 1982 version of "Shaolin Temple" with Jet li introduced into this Kung Fu charm, Benny chan wanted to reprise the same plot in 2011 year again but with slight changes in narrative structure and with advanced technology inclusion that gave complete spirit to movie.
The plot revolves around Andy lau (General Hao)- (Protagonist), Tsao man (Nicholas tse)- Antagonist and with complete surprise Jackie chan (Wudao) was somehow involved too. With them, other cast and crew includes like Wu jing who portrayed the character of Chingeng has also reflected the importance in his presence. It is about how Shaolin Temple had destructed because of cruel events.
General Hao and Tsao man are feuding warlords who expand their arms to spread their powers in neighboring lands. General Hao accomplishes his goal of capturing TangFen state but he cannot shook his head down in front of foreign army when they try to propose Hao to build their railroads in TengFen in return they would supply guns, bombs and powerful weapons as token of their gratitude. But Hao refuses to collaborate with British army and even crushes the ideas of Tsao man. This leads Tsao man to kill General Hao in an event during his daughter's marriage with General Sung's son. In this process General Hao's wife and daughter try to flee from jeopardy taking place. Unfortunately, General Hao and his daughter gets brutally injured but they will escape from war. The next day morning, Hao figures out his daughter may not survive, even though therapies are performed Monks in Shaolin cannot save her life. With deep frustration, Hao's wife abandons him by accusing him for every harm happened in the family.
After some days, Hao realizes and repents for his every mistakes and afflictions, and surrenders to Buddha. Shaolin monks give him place for his enlightenment. Hao digests the complete principles of life and slowly transforms like a better human being. However, Tsao man's army will find Hao alive when they were being warned by him to flee all the refugees from brutal work. Upon hearing this, Tsao Man returns with army to Shaolin and asks Hao to surrender. Hao does not want to create any trouble to monks so he quietly surrenders where as senior brothers in Shaolin Temple plan to flee refugees from Tsao man's army. In this process senior brother Chingeng badly gets hurt and he dies. Later, Monks will successfully release refugees to their family members while they overwhelm, Hao announces every person to leave Shaolin Temple because it is going to be destroyed. Hao asks Wudao to guide and accompany them. After certain period of time, Tsao Man begins shootings and on the other hand British army will explode the entire Shaolin Temple to abduct their treasure. Tsao Man and Hao will have bitter fights, finally Hao explains Tsao Man to repent, give up all his desires for richness. With the huge explosion in Shaolin, Hao rescues Tsao Man stating him to be alive, then Hao dies falling on Buddha's laps. Tsao Man finally realizes the value of humanity and the moment he comes outside he will look around the place which has been completely destroyed, he will collapse and bursts into tears.
At the end, from the distance, Monks and refugees express their sorrow for loss of Shaolin Temple. Wudao states that "Shaolin Temple is in us" and lets refugees to move on.
Benny Chan is producer and director of this movie who delivered quality story line while maintaining tensed tempo through out movie. Being a screenwriter, this has fetched him to visualize much better. Cinematography was pretty decent, using rich camera angles that would drive anybody's attention onto screen. Benny Chan has captured every scene with detailed narration, pictured every character mostly at close-up shots especially the expressions in emotions added immense depth.
Thanking to actors like Andy Lau, Wu jing and Nicholas tse, who were responsible for engaging this plot without giving sense of boredom. An Actor has to be involved in characters that will help audience to connect closer to the movie. With strong narration, good construction of dialogues, perfect expressions of actors in an appropriate timing, with good set designing and relevant costumes this movie will receive sincere applauds.
Apparently, if any person would want to see an extra ordinary performance from Jackie chan, they will definitely disappoint when they will hear Jackie chan always insisting "I quit Kung Fu, I don't know Kung Fu". Jackie chan has nothing to do in this film, unfortunately his character did not reflect importance too. What was lacking in this movie was, when Tsao Man forces Abbot to surrender, Jackie Chan and child Monks would try to help Abbot to set free. Jackie chan begins fighting in the form of cooking style which was not showing any necessity for this movie. It is a complete mystery why Jackie chan had less scope??? Was Benny Chan forcing him to sign this film when Jackie chan was not interested or is Jackie chan slowly losing his charm in Kung fu?
Apart from that this is worth watching movie. Especially you need to watch this film for one reason to see the transformation taking place in evil minds to follow the path in good deeds. Variation of Hao from 1st Act structure to 2nd Act Structure was ravishingly presented.
Benny Chan's explicit visualization of reprising Shaolin set in Zhejiang that cost 10 million yuan will receive sincere accolades from my direction. Color mood of this film also played vital importance pertaining to story line. All the ingredients have been involved with good effort from cast and crew, this movie will receive 9/10 ratings.
